Personality Power Plus!

PERSONALITY POWER PLUS!! This teaching has brought many to new victories as we move away from excuses, blaming and transference and take responsibility for allowing the message of the Gospel to totally re-create who we are – in Christ!! That’s right, God can change our personality! The problem is, many of us like who we are and are comfortable with attitudes and reactions that are not pleasing to God!
Our challenge is, that we are getting all our information from the WORLD, instead of the WORD!!

I want to show you three potential models of personality.
1) Iceberg Model- Subconscious-90% or more is below the surface and only a portion is visible to the world.
Now here is a revelation!! The word Subconscious is never found in the Bible, and neither is the concept! Now, to be honest, the word electricity is not found in the Bible either, but we can utilize what we have discovered about that power. The trouble with Subconscious is that it is used as an EXCUSE for thoughts, feelings and behavior that are not Godly. Let me give the best definition of subconscious. “The collection of stored memories and feelings that are not in immediate focus in my thoughts.” For example, you were not thinking about where you ate Sunday lunch last week until I suggested it. Now, the great news is that Christ can heal our damaged memories, our hurtful past, so that grace and redemption is pulled out each and every time you access the file of every stored memory!! Just don’t believe the devil’s lie that you are captive to and have no power over your subconscious!

2) The Johari Window. This is a popular psychological/cognitive tool. This model suggests that we all have four aspects to our personality.
a) There is a part of our personality that is known to us and that we show to others. We call this the obvious. (OPEN)
b) There is a part of our personality that we know but keep hidden from others. We call these integrity issues.
c) There is a part of our personality that others see while we cannot. We call these blind spots.
d) There is a part of our personality that remains unknown both to ourselves and to others. This part is exposed in a crisis or in times of great blessing. For example, how you would react in a fire or a tragedy. We call this character. But remember, Abraham Lincoln said, the greatest test of a man’s character is not how he deals with trouble, but how he deals with power and blessing.

Well, there are two models of personality. But I want to offer a third today. I call this the TRUTH model. Jesus declares, you will know the truth and the truth will make you free. Only the truth can make you free. Ignorance and deception result in bondage and captivity. Personality is shaped by what we believe about ourselves, our history, our surroundings and our God. If you only believe the lies you been told you will continue in deception. If you only believe the lies you’ve told yourself you will remain in bondage. When you believe the truth of God’s Word you’ll begin to walk in more and more freedom. The Word says that the Spirit of God, this same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead, the precious Holy Spirit will grow His fruit in us . Every one of these will supercharge our personality. Love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. We must turn our personality over to the changing, delivering power of the Holy Spirit’s influence. In 30 years of preaching ministry I can tell you that PERSONALITY is one of the greatest excuses for sin and failure ever concocted by Satan. You’ve heard it. “I can’t help it, it’s just my personality. It’s who I am. Like it or lump it.” That is an EXCUSE and we don’t have license for that in the scripture. Here’s another devilish lie. “Personality cannot be altered. It’s genetic, hereditary.” Well. of course sin IS genetic and hereditary! It started with Adam & Eve, not your mother! But my Bible says that all sin can be forgiven and deliverance is available! Am I suggesting that a personality can be sinful? Absolutely! If your personality is judgmental, critical, unkind, bitter and jealous, yes your personality is sinful. If your personality is suspicious and paranoid, yes it is sinful. But are you ready for some good news? Sin that is repented of and confessed can be not only deleted from our record but delivered out of our personality and normative reactions. The Bible says in Second Corinthians 5:17 “Old things have passed away and all things, all things, ALL THINGS have become new.” Ephesians 4:24 says, “Put on the new man which is created according to God in true righteousness and holiness.” Listen carefully. Personality is not inherited, it is learned. Negative personality traits can be unlearned. Positive, healthy, personality traits can be adopted, practiced and become habitual. What we’re talking about here is the power of the gospel. The gospel means good news because it is the power to change. It is so important to remember that we cannot become what we need to be by remaining what we are. But there is hope. The Bible says the Kingdom of God is righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. That sounds like a pleasing personality to me.
You may want to pray a prayer of confession today. Ask God to forgive you for blaming, excuse-making and accepting ungodly behavior, reactions and personality traits that are not God honoring. What is our goal as a disciple? To become every day, more and more like Jesus!
And that is possible, as we surrender our minds, memories and tendencies to the regenerating power of the Cross of Christ, the power of His Indwelling Spirit and the Life that is in His Word! That is Personality Power Plus!!
